Juneteenth, which takes place on June 19th, is a holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. It originated in Galveston, Texas, when General Granger read the people of Texas General Order Number 3 in 1865, but has since spread across the nation. General Order 3 informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people were now free.
Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. In many places, Juneteenth is celebrated for a week or even a month. People commemorate this important occasion with parades, picnics, and family gatherings.
As of 2021, Juneteenth is a federal holiday, which exemplifies a growth of accountability in American society.
