How To Clean our Dog's Ears

Taking your dog to the vet can be a big chore and exhausting process. Why take them to the vet when there is something you can do to help them on your own?

Cleaning your dog's ears can be a real hassle, especially if you don't know how to do it properly. Their ears are a very important part of their anatomy and need to be cleaned regularly to be able to reach their full hearing abilities. This article gives advice on how to properly clean your dog's ears and the do's and don'ts along the way.

Why is it Important?

When ears are not regularly cleaned, it can cause more build up which can eventually lead to irritation and inflammation. When this happens, airflow begins to be restricted and can ultimately end up in an ear infection. The best way to prevent your dog from getting an ear infection is to simply clean the ears to stop the possibility of the build-up of wax, dirt and other unwelcome debris.

  • Keep the dog still for 5-15 minutes to allow the wax and debris to dissolve.
  • Allow the dog to shake head as needed to remove excess fluid.

  • Treat ear every month or as directed by your veterinarian.

How Not to Clean Your Dog's Ears

One of the biggest warnings is to clean your dog's ears outside! Dogs tend to shake and you could end up with some unwanted excess fluid in your house. It is also important to never use a cotton swab. Usually, instead of removing the wax, it just gets pushed further back into the ear canal and can cause more discomfort.
